Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of nearly all cases of cervical cancer. Prevalence of HPV is relatively high and, all though most cases resolve and have little long-term significance, between 5 and 10 % patients develop lesions on the cervix - that can lead to cervical cancer. The current treatment for cervical lesions is surgery.
Most cases of HPV are eliminated by the host's immune system.
Bionor Pharma is currently developing a peptide-based therapeutic vaccine aimed at stimulating cell-mediated immunity – enabling the immune system to detect and combat ongoing HPV infection.
HPV disease progression is divided into three stages of increasing severity, CIN I, CIN II and CIN III. The therapeutic vaccine will offer a non-surgical treatment option to treat or prevent progression to CIN III ultimately resulting in eradication of infection. The Company has initiated research and development of peptide candidates for HPV.
